Wildren were a form of human in an alternate timeline. They were created from children who were aged forty years by the Utopian Engine, and regressed to a primitive state. Some Wildren retained the primitive urge to reporduce, and as a result bore offspring. Wildren could not swim, and therefore had a fear of water. (PROSE: Reckless Engineering)
