Varga was the leader of a squadron of Ice Warriors who visited prehistoric Earth. Their ship crashed and became encased at the foot of an ice mountain. Varga and his crew went into suspended animation until they were revived during the Ice Age of the year 5000.

Varga was discovered and dug out by Arden's expedition. They brought him back to Brittanicus Base and started to thaw him. He recovered, knocked Jamie McCrimmon unconscious and took Victoria Waterfield hostage, forcing her to help him find the controls used to thaw him. They hid in the base, and Varga explained who he was and that he was from Mars. He asked Victoria how long he was buried in the ice. Then, he forced Victoria to find the power packs used to revive him. He took some with Victoria from the medi-centre, and he knocked out Leader Clent with a power pack. He took her back to his buried ship and thawed Zondal, Rintan and Isbur.

He interrogated Victoria and learned about the base and the ioniser. He and his warriors dug out their ship and created defenses in the cave. He and his warriors created an ambush, as Arden and Jamie found the excavated ship, and were shot. Arden was killed, but Jamie was maimed and his legs were affected for some time. Varga let Victoria escape, and he and Zondal watched her on a monitor. Varga decides not to kill Victoria with their weapon concealed in the ice wall, as the base will know she is alive, and he claimed ''She is the bait....''.

Varga then sent Turoc to capture Victoria, however Turoc died gripped onto Victoria's arm in an avalanche. Varga and Zondal concur that the ioniser is their only chance after examining that their ship is functional but low on fuel. Storr finds Victoria and releases he from Turoc's grip, but he want's to befriend the Ice Warriors. Victoria implores not to go back, alas Varga captures her again and she is taken back inside the ship. Storr explains that he is against the scientists and wants to help the Ice Warriors destroy the scientists, but Varga destroyed him.

The Second Doctor met with Varga and tried to convince him the scientists meant them no harm, but Varga was still suspicious of the destructive capabilities of the ioniser, thinking it was a gun.

When Zondal successfully fired the sonic cannon at the base which caused only minor damage, Varga got into contact with Clent and said that it would be used again unless the base surrendered. Clent surrendered, and a peaceful talk was arranged. However it failed when Walters attempted to kill the Ice Warriors, but he was killed by one of Varga's warriors. Clent and Jan Garrett were forced by Varga to turn off the ioniser. Meanwhile, scientist Elric Penley turned up the heat controls, and the Doctor used the Ice Warriors' sonic cannon to disable the warriors. Varga, Rintan and Isbur returned to their ship where they helped Zondal recover.

Varga then attempted to return to Mars, but died along with the rest of the Ice Warriors in the explosion of his spacecraft when the scientists turned on the ioniser. (TV: The Ice Warriors)
