According to the Tenth Doctor, Jonathan Swift was an 18th century "writer chap" who first invented the name Vanessa. (PROSE: The Stone Rose) The Doctor met him at some point before his second incarnation, and thought him a "smart human being". Swift once said to him, "There's none so blind as they that won't see." (PROSE: The Wheel of Ice)
He authored Gulliver's Travels, a book with which the First Doctor was familiar, in the first half of the century. (PROSE: The Empire of Glass) The Second Doctor met the protagonist of that novel, Lemuel Gulliver, in the Land of Fiction. (TV: The Mind Robber)
