Torchwood Estate
Owned by the Macleash Family since the 1500's, Scotlands stately home 'Torchwood House' is the centre of the Torchwood Estate and is where The Doctor and Rose helped defend Queen Victoria from the Werewolf (DW:Tooth and Claw).
Part of the house was turned into an observatory by Sir George Macleash under the auspices of Victoria's husband, the Prince Regent Albert of Saxe Coburg. The Victorian era was a time of great invention, adventure and discovery, and their keen interest in the mysteries of the heavens bought both men to become aware of the possible dangers to the British Monarchy from alien invasion. Consequently they had the foresite to include into the observatory the means of turning the telescope into a powerful energy-beam weapon which was used by The Doctor to destroy the Werewolf, thus saving Queen Victoria and the Monarchy.
As a direct result of these events Victoria created the Torchwood Institute and upon banishing the Doctor and Rose from the British Isles she warned darkly that there would be dire consequences should they ever attempt to return.
