The Carolinas

As evidenced in a 16 April 1861 letter from Claire Bartlett to Will Johnson, "the Carolinas" was colloquial shorthand for the combined area of North and South Carolina. However, the term had no legal force, as South Carolina acted independently of North Carolina when it issued its "declaration of independence" from the Federal Union. (PROSE: Blood and Hope)
