A rose was, according to Rose Tyler, "a sort of plant". (TV: The End of the World) The smell of roses was a desirable scent that the Fifth Doctor found "quite peaceful". (TV: Castrovalva) The flower was also considered beautiful and wondrous, but had sharp thorns. The adage "every rose has its thorns" was a comment of the plants combination of beauty and danger. (TV: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe)

On Dark Space 8, Nicky Newman bought some roses for Mel to make up for his earlier behaviour. (AUDIO: Bang-Bang-a-Boom!) The Midnight Cathedral smelled thoroughly of roses everywhere. (PROSE: The Quantum Archangel) Jack Dupre once made a red rose seemingly appear out of thin air; Fitz Kreiner described it as "fresh and full, a water drop trembling on one of the leaves". (PROSE: The City of the Dead) Susan Foreman's real name in High Gallifreyan (Arkytior) meant rose. (PROSE: Roses)

Fairies could make rose petals flow out of people's mouths. These people then died of asphyxiation. (TV: Small Worlds)

Black roses grew on Florana. (AUDIO: The Elite)
