The Master, like the Doctor, is a Time Lord. To use an Earth literary analogy, he is somewhat of a Moriaty to the Doctor's Holmes. He has been described as "one of the most evil and corrupt beings (the) Time Lord race has ever produced ("The Five Doctors")."

The Master first appears in the story Terror of the Autons, when his TARDIS materializes in the form of a circus trailer. He promptly hypnotizes the circus troupe to obey his orders. Over the next few years, he and his hypnotized or otherwise suborned followers engage in several attempts to conquer the Earth, often with the aid of alien invaders.

At the end of Time Warrior, he is captured by the Chronovore; after this event he appears much more rarely. By The Deadly Assassin he has exhausted his supply of regenerations and is attempting to rejuvenate himself; this theme of acquiring a new cycle of regenerations appears throughout his future appearances.

At the end of the movie, he falls into the Eye of Harmony, and is presumably destroyed. The Doctor claims that he has been eaten by the TARDIS.
