So I'm curious what new and old Whovians think about the fact that our next Dalek story will probably be different from previous ones. Hopefully. And I don't just mean "far and away better" when I say different.

Recap: The only true Daleks we've seen in new Who, were in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, and Victory of the Daleks. And possibly "Dalek," if that Dalek's backstory wasn't a lie. Plus the Cult of Skaro, but they were a separate culture whose personalities were (intentionally) nothing like normal Daleks. So really, the Daleks in TSE/JE were the first and only time new-Whovians have ever seen Daleks (as a culture or a war machine) in action.

We were promised a break from Dalek stories... well, we got a year off. Apparently S7 will have Daleks. If you need to groan, get it out of your system, before I ask...

What do you expect from new-Who's "real Dalek debut?" They're pure, they're organized, they're loose in the cosmos. Thanks to a cut-away moment (The Pandorica Opens) we know a group of them makes alliances to save the universe from an exploding TARDIS -- meaning at some point they grow strong enough to reveal themselves to other races with an open hand -- err, sucker -- of truce. Risky move, so I suspect they have confidence of numbers at that point.

My own answer is, I hope for something like a mini-version of The Dalek Master Plan, or more recently The Long Game and BW/PotW, where their involvement is a mystery until it's too late. That is their M.O. after all, and the suspense lasts long enough to spin quite a story while we wait to see screaming pepperpots. And most of all I expect to see the Doctor lose big in that upcoming encounter. Big, but not in the standard ways we're all used to (losing a companion, losing his own life, etc). Maybe the Doctor is trying to figure out a way to revert the Time War without making things worse -- and the Daleks will advance his plans for him before he's ready. The Daleks do have a way of screaming "Anything the Doctor can do, we can do better" -- and he's already rebooted the universe in this incarnation.

Y'all's thoughts? Agonaga talk to me 14:37, June 13, 2012 (UTC)

We've seen those stories. I'd like a new one. Boblipton talk to me 15:25, June 13, 2012 (UTC)

I'd rather they made a multi cyberman story than a multi dalek story but oh well I suppose I should be grateful they've given us a multi story at all. 77.86.4.57talk to me 22:22, June 16, 2012 (UTC)

For all intents and purposes, the new Daleks have been real Daleks. There are genetic differences in some of the cases (particularly Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways), but that is the kind of difference that only a Dalek would care about. They still hate everything that is different from them and they still exterminate everything in their paths, so they are essentially the same as the Daleks that we have all known and loved since the 1960s. I'll really be happy to see the Daleks return in any story, as long as they aren't those awful plastic Daleks from Victory of the Daleks.Icecreamdif talk to me 18:52, June 18, 2012 (UTC)

here here. also, they shouldn't be too easily defeated. some of the more recent dalek stories have been getting a bit ridiculous on that front. Imamadmad talk to me 03:13, June 23, 2012 (UTC)

I beg to differ, and I literally mean beg. The new-Who Daleks are kinda mentally handicapped. Or, I suppose, to be more honest: The writers have not done the Daleks justice, and I'm giving them an excuse for it -- mongrel Daleks are made of fail. And it makes sense to do this on purpose (*cough* yes I just said "they meant to do that," I hope this font sounds like Paul Reuben) in order to create a rising level of danger as the new-Who-Daleks' arc unfolds. 76.125.217.103talk to me 15:04, July 3, 2012 (UTC) (User:Agonaga)

How exactly are the new Daleks mentally handicapped, or how haven't the writers been doing them justice. To defeat the most in-Dalek of the new series Daleks, the ones in Parting of the Ways, required nothing less then a freaking God. The Daleks are certainly just as much of a threat as ever, if not moreso, so how exactly are they mentally handicapped?Icecreamdif talk to me 02:34, July 11, 2012 (UTC)
I was referring to the ones descending from the Emperor's use of filtered human DNA, specifically. Which, I assume, includes all Daleks seen before VotD except for the Cult and Davros's brief resurgent empire. Those human-DNA-fabricated Daleks hate their own existence; they self-destruct after performing regeneration routines; they're bred to include religious devotion and self-loathing; they have almost no survival instinct; and the Doctor frankly has near-zero fear of them whatsoever - except for in Dalek, when he hadn't learned of their ilk yet. So overall, I'm kinda picturing in s7e01 AotD we'll watch him explain something to the effect that "no, these are real Daleks now, and - hush. It's not safe to run anymore." Agonaga talk to me 23:02, July 18, 2012 (UTC)
Those Daleks were only in Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. The Emperor bred them because (he thought) he was the only surviving Dalek after the Time War, and thus harvested the Humans to create new Daleks. Any Dalek that comes from during or before the Time War, including the Cult of Skaro and the lone Dalek from Dalek is a real, pure Dalek. The Daleks from the beginning of Victory of the Daleks may have come from the events of Parting of the Ways though, but the ugly progenitor Daleks have been specifically stated to be pure Daleks. Icecreamdif 11:51, July 19, 2012 (UTC)
Right, so that's what I'm getting at. TSE/JE was the only time we've seen pure Daleks in force, and the stakes were... appropriate for that enemy :) Now (despite unfortunate armor design) we have the beginning of a (hopefully) stable Dalek race again. Bring forth the doomsday epics! Agonaga 02:35, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, Agonaga, but most of the TSE/JE Daleks weren't pure Daleks. As Davros revealed, they'd been created from his genetic material. That makes them far closer to pure Daleks than those in Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways, of course, but still not the real thing. --2.96.17.69talk to me 12:01, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
They were created from mutated Kaled DNA. How are they not pure? The Daleks in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday were also pure Daleks who had been imprisoned during the Time War.Icecreamdif 14:26, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, @2.96, being handcrafted by Davros off DNA of a member of his own race, makes them as pure as a Dalek gets. Agonaga 14:32, July 21, 2012 (UTC)
Better take another look at Remembrance of the Daleks. The Imperial Daleks were handcrafted by Davros, too, but the original Daleks very definitely didn't regard them as pure Daleks. Ace explained why to Rachel & Allison (the two scientific advisors) in episode 4. --78.146.177.55talk to me 09:50, July 22, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, and the Imperial Daleks didn't regard the original Daleks as pure. The reason that the renegades didn't like the Imperials wasn't just because they'd we're handcrafted by Davros. Davros improved the Daleks, so that they weren't actually the same as the original. Remember, one group even had claws or something. Either way, we aren't Daleks, so I don't know why we should be making this kind of distinction. If they're scary salt shakers with plungers that go around exterminating people, then they are real Daleks. Only a Dalek would care how "pure" they are.Icecreamdif 16:03, July 22, 2012 (UTC)
Much as I hate to admit it, Icecreamdif has a good point there. --89.241.72.3talk to me 22:17, July 22, 2012 (UTC)
