The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith is the third story in The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 3. This episode includes an appearance by David Tennant as the Doctor, the first time new footage of the Doctor has been included in any of the spin-off series.

Synopsis

After Sarah Jane is acting suspiciously,Luke, Clyde, Rani and K-9 investigate and find that Sarah Jane has a boyfriend - Peter Dalton. they are going to get married. Clyde suspects Peter may be an alien. At the wedding the Tricksters returns and holds the church in a prison. Can the Doctor save Sarah Jane and the entire planet Earth?

Plot

It is the fifth time Sarah Jane Smith has made an excuse to the gang for going out, and Luke activates Mr Smith and gets him to track Sarah Jane. Luke, Clyde and Rani find Sarah Jane on a date with a posh-looking man and kisses him. Sarah Jane is at first upset and shocked when she learns from Mr Smith and K-9 that the gang have been spying on her, and reveals that she was about to tell them. The man's name is Peter Dalton; Sarah Jane forgives them and jokes with Luke about how she might have to reveal to Peter her investigations with aliens.

Peter arrives and Clyde, Rani and Gita try to spy on him; an alien Sarah Jane got in a package then goes on a rampage in Bannerman Road and Peter sees K-9. Sarah Jane is able to misdirect Peter, and when she, Peter and Luke go out to an Italian restaurant to talk, Mr Smith sends the alien back to its home planet. Luke and Peter quickly bond, but Clyde and Rani find out that Peter's house is virtually empty. At another time, Peter proposes to Sarah Jane: she accepts, and the surrounding crowds applaud. However, the mysterious ring begins to glow.

In the attic, Clyde tries to convince Sarah Jane that Peter may be more than he seems: Sarah Jane claims that she knows about the emtpy house, and Peter now lives in a flat closer to work. Rani and Luke are convinced, but Clyde is still very suspicious, and is shocked that Sarah Jane is getting married to Peter in two weeks. Sarah Jane appears to be in a trance, controlled by her engagement ring. Mr Smith attempts to alert Sarah Jane to alien activity, but she deactivates him, saying that she doesn't want to deal with aliens anymore and may never have to tell Peter about her secret life.

On the wedding day, Clyde attempts to subtley insult Peter, saying that it is too fast; this angers Luke, who shouts at Clyde for this. Sarah Jane then arrives, followed by Rani (the bridesmaid), and it is strongly implied that Luke fancies Rani. Clyde also reveals to some that K-9 is here, who detects alien activity, further enraging Luke. When the Superintendant Registrar asks whether anyone has to object to speak now, the Doctor arrives, shouting 'STOP THIS WEDDING NOW!' A white-cloaked Trickster than materialses and disappears with Sarah Jane and Peter...

Story Notes

  • This will be first episode of any Doctor Who spin off to feature the Doctor himself in new footage. He previously appeared as a flashback clip in Series 2 and as the Third and Fourth Doctors in the previous episode.
  • This marks the third apperance for The Trickster, the first two being in SJA: Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? and SJA: The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith. The Trickster was also involved in (but did not appear in) the events of DW: Turn Left.
  • Production of this story occurred after the filming of DW: The End of Time, making this David Tennant's final (for now) work as the Doctor.[2]
  • Clyde and Rani will meet the Doctor for the first time along with Luke meeting the Doctor in person for the first time (Having seen him via subwave network in The Stolen Earth and Journey's End).
  • The Pantheon of Discord is mentioned in the letter from the Doctor in the Doctor Who Storybook 2010

Myths

  • When the Doctor first hears Rani's name, he will initially believe her to be the Time Lady Rani. This is highly improbable, he may recall a link to The Rani or the character may be referenced but it is highly unlikely he will believe Rani to be the Time Lady.
  • There are rumours of the Brigadier attending Sarah Jane's wedding, however Nicholas Courtney has not been seen on set (though no set photos exist currently) nor has the BBC announced his appearance or even the inclusion of Courtney, suggesting that this will not occur. Nicholas Courtney sadly suffered a stroke around the time and was unable to film. He was upset not to have met the David Tennant for the planned Doctor/ Brig reunion. Luckily Courtney has made a recovery.
  • Nigel Havers will play Sarah Jane's boyfriend called Peter Dalton and he is really an alien. Havers features on the cover of the novelisation and presumably will play her boyfriend. The name Peter Dalton was confirmed by a BBC Synopsis and Havers said in a recent interview he would play an alien but didn't go into details.
  • It was rumoured that Maria would appear at the wedding.
  • The italics annoy me because they say that things aren't true in the MYTHS section
