Margaret Cain graduated from the University of Sheffield, with a first-class honours degree in chemistry. She later went on to join the Bowie Base One mission on Mars. (TV: The Waters of Mars)

In 2018, Dr Jade McIntyre was a research scientist at the university and her colleague Anna was part of the admin team. The zoology department conducted a study on arachnids and arthropods, especially spiders, and sought to find a way to keep spiders alive longer. Their research, combined with the effects of the toxic waste under Jack Robertson's luxury hotel in Sheffield contributed to the giant spider outbreak in the city. (TV: Arachnids in the UK)
