Close Gas was a gaseous weapon invented by Professor Mirsky in a timeline in which Emily Rutherford and Tom Charrington separated as teenagers. The weapon was used by terrorists to kill hundreds of schoolchildren. When the Third Doctor encouraged Emily and Tom to stay together, the timeline was averted, and Mirsky never invented the weapon.
