Bane was an organic ingredient found in the Bubble Shock! soft drink. It resisted analysis, as if it were alive and knew it was being scanned. In reality it was an enzyme secreted by the Bane Mother which had addictive properties. The Mother could then telepathically control Bane drinkers. However, while Bane affected 98% of the human population, 2% had an immunity. The Bane created the Archetype in order to find out why 2% had the biological resistance. (TV: Invasion of the Bane) It should be noted that despite their resistance to the addictive nature of the enzyme, if forced to ingest it, the Bane Mother will still be able to take control over the person.

Among the 2% were Maria Jackson, Chrissie Jackson, (TV: Invasion of the Bane) and Rani Chandra. (TV: Enemy of the Bane) Sarah Jane Smith may also have been immune but it is unknown as she deliberately avoided the drink due to her suspicions over it. As Maria and her mother were immune, it is likely that the immunity to the enzyme is genetic and can be passed from parent to child.
