A warlord was a type of military and political leader.

In 1911, an alliance of Nationalist warlords led by Sun Yat Sen launched a revolution against the young Chinese Emperor, Pu Yi, and the ailing Chinese Empire. The alliance formed into the Kuomintang and became the governing party of republican China. (PROSE: The Shadow of Weng-Chiang)
