A temple was a building that could contain religious iconography, statuary and altars. They were used for many purposes: sacrificial ceremonies, celebrations, worship, specific and specialised ceremonies as well as just for hiding in. (PROSE: The Price of Paradise)[additional sources needed]

The Doctor had visited many temples during his travels, including an Aztec temple, (TV: The Aztecs) the temple of Amdo in Atlantis, (TV: The Underwater Menace) the temple of Aggedor on Peladon, (TV: The Curse of Peladon, The Monster of Peladon) a Peruvian temple which had Exxilon markings on its walls (TV: Death to the Daleks) the temple of Demnos in San Martino, (TV: The Masque of Mandragora) the temple of Kroll on Delta III, (TV: The Power of Kroll) the temple of Ishtar in Kish (PROSE: Timewyrm: Genesys) the Aplan Mortarium on Alfava Metraxis (TV: The Time of Angels) and the Pyramid of the Rings of Akhaten. The Arcateenians worshipped in huge temples "the size of cities." (TV: Greeks Bearing Gifts)
