On Gallifrey, a court defender was appointed to represent a defendant in a trial to ensure that their interests were fully protected. However, a defendant could deny such representation if they so wished. During his trial aboard the Space Station Zenobia, the Sixth Doctor was offered a court defender by the Inquisitor but declined, opting to represent himself. (TV: The Mysterious Planet, Mindwarp)
