A Dalek was one of three Daleks aboard a Dalek ship which survived an encounter with the Doctor. While another remained aboard the ship, this Dalek and another masqueraded as Ironsides. (TV: Victory of the Daleks)

Biography

A Dalek saucer and its crew of three Daleks survived the fall of the New Dalek Empire (PROSE: Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe) and fell through time to 1941. They acquired an original Progenitor device, which could create new Daleks, but the device did not respond to them because it did not recognise them as Daleks. The three decided to trick the Doctor into proving to the Progenitor that they were, indeed, Daleks.

They created Edwin Bracewell, an android that was programmed to think of himself as a British scientist who constructed a pair of robot war machines, and provided him with charts and testing results realistic enough to take to the British Army to use in their war with the Nazis in 1941, with of the three Daleks posing as Ironside prototypes. Concerned, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill alerted the Eleventh Doctor, who took a month to arrive.

This Ironside was in the Cabinet War Rooms when it was approached by Amy Pond, the companion of the Doctor. Amy brought forward the Doctor's claim that the Ironside was a dangerous alien. The Ironside did not acknowledge this claim, merely maintaining that it was a British soldier before quickly excusing itself, claiming that it had duties to perform. As the Doctor attempted to convince Winston Churchill of the Ironsides' true nature, this Ironside approached him, offering assistance only to be chided by the Doctor.

Shortly after, the Ironside entered the room as the Doctor, increasingly enraged, lashed out at its counterpart, subjecting it to a physical attack in an attempt to draw out its Dalek nature. Once the Doctor identified himself, and that the Ironsides were Daleks, the first Ironside acknowledged that he was correct and had its partner review and transmit a record of his testimony to the progenitor, which accepted the testimony.

As the Doctor instructed everyone to get back, Churchill ordered marines into the room. A pair of marines quickly entered, only to be exterminated by the second Ironside. When Professor Bracewell attempted to assert himself as their creator, the first Ironside blasted off his left hand, revealing him to be an android they had created. Anticipating victory, both Ironsides teleported back to their ship.

The Ironside is destroyed. (TV: Victory of the Daleks)

Aboard the Dalek ship, all three Daleks watched as the progenitor entered the final phase. The Doctor confronted them and held the Daleks at bay with a "TARDIS destruct mechanism," actually a Jammy Dodger. The Daleks revealed their intentions and created five new Daleks, the first of a New Dalek Paradigm. The new white Supreme Dalek deemed that the trio of older Daleks, grown out of the DNA of Davros, (TV: The Stolen Earth) were "impure". The three Daleks accepted this and allowed themselves to be disintegrated by the new Daleks; the second Ironside was the last to be exterminated, by the red Drone Dalek. (TV: Victory of the Daleks)

Behind the scenes

  • Though the two Ironsides are physically indistinguishable, their roles are distinguished in the script, which names them "Dalek 1" and "Dalek 2".
  • Voice actor Nicholas Briggs portrays "Dalek 2" with a slightly deeper voice than "Dalek 1".
  • The silhouette of an unidentified Ironside appears in TV: The Beast Below, when Winston Churchill calls the Eleventh Doctor.
