The Smoke were entities created by Abby and Zara's damage to the timelines. The Fifth Doctor tricked the creatures into merging into a cloud and entering his TARDIS, where they repeatedly killed him and, with nobody to feed on and with no way to get out, died. (AUDIO: The People Made of Smoke)
