Either way, it doesn't have to make any difference. At the end of the day, the character he was playing was still "The Fourth Doctor". Doctor Who has always left unanswered, ambiguous, fourth wall breaking moments in and they've neither impeded the story nor our way of dealing with their inclusion. We could just leave a behind the scenes note in the Story Notes section and have done with it, due to it not strictly being a Production Error.

In summary- I'm all for validity!
