A petrol tank was a vehicle component into which petrol could be inserted and then delivered to an engine.
The Third Doctor destroyed the Multi-Mobile by putting sugar cubes in its petrol tank, causing the vehicle's engines to seize up while it was crossing a marsh. (COMIC: The Multi-Mobile)
