Holo-cubes, or hover-cubes, were floating "glassy", emerald-coloured cubes capable of housing a digitised consciousness and projecting a "hard-light techno-ghost" avatar for them, shaped by their own will and sense of self. They were prone to overheating and melting down if they weren't regularly switched off for extended rest-periods.

They were used by the Bookkeepers of the Plume Coteries' Library to house the biodata-prints of individuals they had Time-Ladled out of time and space in order to interview them as eyewitnesses to historical events. Normal procedure was for the cubes to be destroyed once the interview process was done. However, Callum and Maritsa rescued Coloth from this fate after he was ladled up. Coloth began to experiment with what he could do with the hologram technology, but was initially unable to create actual living flesh; the "best he could manage" was vegetable matter, leading to him manifesting as a tangible humanoid cactus.
