Danton was executed on the orders of Maximilien Robespierre, who claimed that Danton was conspiring to restore the French monarchy.
Robespierre told the First Doctor that his friends had been and continued to plot against him with the aim of achieving power for themselves, mentioning Danton and the Girondins as examples of those he had had to "dispose of" (TV: The Reign of Terror [+]Loading...["The Reign of Terror (TV story)"]) or "remove".
