The Screaming Prison was a comic story published in Doctor Who: Battles in Time. It was written by Stephen Cole.

Opening narration box[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Doctor and Martha have agreed to help stranded space warrior Thaur fight back against his enemies...

Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

The TARDIS crew locate Thaur the Warrior's fellow warrior king (Vulsturg the Vast) bound to a large rock on an unnamed planetoid. When they go to untie him, the slimy green rocks (actually flying creatures), start to emit a deafening noise, a piercing and painful scream.

By reversing the sonic field of three hearing aids that the Doctor picked up on the planet Wispah, the noise is blocked out. They untie the unconscious Vulsturg. However, the screaming creatures weren't the primary jailers. They were an alarm for a much bigger, green and savage beast. As the beast attacks, the Doctor climbs on its head and attaches the three hearing aids, one to each of its three ears which are mounted on top of its head.

Using his sonic screwdriver to return the hearing aids to a normal setting, the beast is overcome by the amplified sound of screaming and rendered unconscious. With the hearing aids now shorted out, the Doctor, Martha, Thaur and now Vulsturg leave in the TARDIS to find the third warrior before the beast awakes.

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Supporting the series of collectable Doctor Who trading cards, the magazine carried a regular four page, individually titled comic strip of the Tenth Doctor's adventures.
  • The artwork and colours were bold and bright, reflecting the tone of the magazine and, as did Doctor Who Adventures, reflected the appeal to readers younger than those catered to by Doctor Who Magazine.
  • The Battles in Time comic strip sought to reinforce the association of its Doctor with the one seen on screen with "props" from the TV series: blue/brown suit, intelligent-looking glasses, sonic screwdriver and psychic paper.
