Phillip was a cousin of Miriam Henwick. When Miriam was six years old in 1936, he was one of a number of cousins staying at the Henwick family's home in Wales, near Cardiff. The youngest boy, he and Miriam were close because they were almost the same age.
One night, the cousins decided to play hide and seek. Miriam went first, and Phillip found her right away, after which it was his turn to hide. Closing her eyes and counting to twenty, Miriam searched for him for a while before what felt like a storm descended on the house, and a bolt of lightning lit up Miriam's bedroom. Becoming frightened, Miriam called for Phillip to show himself so they could end their game, but he didn't answer. He had been taken by the Zeeng, interdimensional aliens, through a rift which entered into the house through a fireplace in Miriam's bedroom.
Miriam told her mother what had happened, and they searched for Phillip. When he wasn't found right away, Miriam's father and the aunts and uncles were brought in to aid with the search. After every inch of the house and grounds had been searched, the authorities were called, and the ensuing search lasted for days. No trace of him was ever found, nor any clues as to how he had left the house.
In the nights after Phillip's disappearance, Miriam thought she heard him calling her name when she was alone in her bedroom. Miriam kept the strange events secret, but was inspired by the lightning only she had noticed to become a scientist specializing in bioelectronics.
In 2000, Miriam's daughter Angela and grandson Noah were taken by the Zeeng as well. The Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler, having arrived while attempting to refuel the TARDIS, investigated with Miriam's granddaughter Lily, and Miriam told them about Phillip. The Doctor was able to rescue Angela and Noah from the Zeeng's dimension and seal the rift for good. (PROSE: The Monster in the Cupboard [+]Loading...["The Monster in the Cupboard (novel)"])
