The Vale of Iptheus was a planet visited by the Eighth Doctor and Bliss during the events of the Last Great Time War, once a paradise, but now with a starving population due to the aftereffects of the war. Aeronwen had a plan to kill the hungry of the planet, using robots known as the Enablers to deliver a psychic substance called Ichor that people would think was food until they starved to death, becoming a member of the Legion of Bone, an army of Skeletons. After foiling Aeronwen, the Doctor called in a favor from Tamasan for the Time Lords to protect the planet in exchange for him helping during the war. (AUDIO: The Famished Lands)

Later, the Eleventh Doctor and Valarie Lockwood found themselves on the planet, Valarie furious for The Doctor's Mr Foreman personality having tortured her, using parts of her cybernetic body to save a planet. (AUDIO: Curiosity Shop) The planet had been destroyed by a Time Lord weapon at some point during the war. The Doctor could hardly recall having been there, not remembering who he was travelling with and only that there were skeletons involved. The only survivors on the planet were two survey robots searching for life, robots that had gradually become sentient, Augustus (robot) and Lionel (robot), who would have run out of power without The Doctor and Valarie's help. After the Doctor and Valarie reconciled and left, Augustus and Lionel continued to search for survivors. (AUDIO: Broken Hearts)
