Apologies if I just haven't been able to find the policy, but it seems there isn't a policy for the categorisation of places which are from the real world but which are not described in any valid source as residing in the area (e.g. county, city) in which they actually exist. That's confusing, so for example, Sutton Hoo in the real world resides in Suffolk, but its location in Suffolk hasn't been mentioned in any valid source. So, can Sutton Hoo be categorised into the currently non-existent Category:Suffolk locations? Or, is Sutton Hoo not allowed to be categorised into Category:Suffolk locations, meaning that a new category branch which includes Category:Suffolk locations from the real world needs to be created? Thanks! Jamjam77 ☎ 14:34, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Discussion[[edit source]]
To make a long story short, this isn't allowed under current policy, and, indeed, is forbidden, but it might be okay in the future due to Forum:Loosening T:NO RW. (Personally I think due to concerns laid out at User talk:OverAnalyser it would be a bad idea.) Najawin ☎ 15:50, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- So, would my latter suggestion be a better approach? I feel like it's human nature for people to want to look up where they live on the Wiki, and so it would be great to facilitate that in a way that doesn't muddle things. Jamjam77 ☎ 16:22, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- No, the latter category is a subcategory of the former, meaning that that all members of the latter must also qualify for the former. See as well the header on "from the real world" categories, such as Category:Singers from the real world.
- Singers from the real world is a member of a category that organizes things within Doctor Who universe. As such it (or, if a subcategory, articles within it) must be written from that point of view. Care must be taken with articles or subcategories like this to ensure that we stress only what is known within the DWU.
- Emphasis present in the original at all times. Najawin ☎ 16:46, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
