Major Varl was a Sontaran officer of the Ninth Sontaran Battle Group.

Biography

Varl served as one of Group Marshal Stike's aides in the Ninth Sontaran Battle Group and took part in the massacre of Space Station Camera, (PROSE: The Two Doctors [+]Loading...["The Two Doctors (novelisation)"]) after which Stike sent him to Earth with Joinson Dastari, Chessene o' the Franzine Grig, Shockeye o' the Quawncing Grig and the captive Second Doctor to set up a homing beacon for his Sontaran scout ship. He also assisted in setting up a laboratory for the Doctor's symbiotic nuclei to be isolated.

Following Stike's arrival at the Doña Arana's hacienda, he and Varl captured the Sixth Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon and were tricked into thinking that the Doctor had primed the Kartz-Reimer module with his Rassilon Imprimatur. Chessene told them to search for the Sixth Doctor and Jamie, but Stike instead intended to kill his supposed allies and steal the Kartz-Reimer module, ordering Varl to report to Sontaran High Command and set the scout ship to self-destruct. Once Varl had done so, he joined Stike in attempting to kill Chessene, but she killed him with coronic acid. (TV: The Two Doctors [+]Loading...["The Two Doctors (TV story)"])

Legacy

Stike intended to recommend Varl for inclusion in the Golden Roll of Sontaran Heroes. (PROSE: The Two Doctors [+]Loading...["The Two Doctors (novelisation)"]) However, he was killed in the explosion of his scout ship before he could leave Earth. Personality

Varl refused to take orders from his allies, referring to them as "civilians", and insisted on announcing Stike until Stike ordered him to treat their allies as equals. (TV: The Two Doctors [+]Loading...["The Two Doctors (TV story)"])

Appearance

Chessene o' the Franzine Grig was only able to tell Varl and Stike apart due to Stike having more gold braid on his shoulders. (PROSE: The Two Doctors [+]Loading...["The Two Doctors (novelisation)"])
