The Pyrovillian Alternative would have come into being had the Pyrovilles' plan succeeded with both the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the subsequent destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD never having occurred. As a result, the city would have been at the heart of a new empire which would reach out to topple Rome and encompass the entire Earth. When the Tenth Doctor caused the eruption of the volcano, a rift in time was briefly opened over Pompeii. Echoing back through the previous 17 years, this time rift caused the gift of accurate prophecy that all the soothsayers and fortune-tellers in Pompeii had enjoyed.
