Doctor Who television stories were novelised by a number of publishers before Target Books obtained the licence to publish the novelisations. (See the Target Books cover gallery.) Additionally, in the American market Pinnacle Books published some novelisations of Doctor Who television stories.

In the 1990s and 2000s several other novelisations, based on radio dramas, the 1996 TV movie, webcasts and direct-to-video stories were released. A novelisation of the unfinished TV story Shada was published in 2012.

These were later republished by Target Books. These covers were reused in facsimile editions published by BBC Books in 2016.

These covers feature the Fourth Doctor. No changes were made to the text and illustrations that feature the First Doctor.
