A board game was a kind of game which involved players moving pieces across a board. According to the Tenth Doctor, these pieces could be made of cut-out cardboard. Board games began to wane in popularity by the start of the 21st century, gradually being replaced by digital screen-based entertainment. Popular board games included snakes and ladders, (PROSE: Sick Building) chess, (TV: Nightmare in Silver) and Monopoly. (PROSE: Every Day)

Martha Jones and her family would play board games on Boxing Day, which often led to arguments. (PROSE: Sick Building)
