The father of Mickey, Jackson Smith had worked a key-cutter at Clifton's Parade. Sometime before 2002 he went to Spain and left his son alone. Mickey went to live with his grandmother, Rita-Anne.

The father of Ricky Smith, Mickey's counterpart had done the same. (DW: Rise of the Cybermen)
