Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 and President of the United States in the 1870s.
Biography

In 1863, Grant encountered the Third Doctor, who gave President Abraham Lincoln a sketched map that he had made of the Confederate lines at Gettysburg. Lincoln gave the map to Grant, thus helping the Union Army to win the Battle of Gettysburg. General Grant then confiscated the Doctor's TARDIS, telling the Doctor that he found him suspicious and that his "chicken shack" was to stay in military hands until he gave it clearance. On 9 April 1865, Grant accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, after an exchange of letters. (PROSE: Blood and Hope [+]Loading...["Blood and Hope (novel)"])
On 14 April 1865, Grant and his wife had originally planned to attend Ford's Theatre alongside President Lincoln, however, they would cancel and instead take the night train to Burlington. In their stead, Major Rathbone and his fiancée Clara Harris. That night, Lincoln would be assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Ulysses S. Grant wrote On The Art Of War. One quote from it was: "The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. In an advertisement for the Queen's Hotel in Piccadilly, Manchester, President Grant was listed among past guests which also included "the Kings of Belgium, Portugal and Roumania, the Emperor of Brazil, Prince Napoleon" and "General Gordon of Khartoum, Dickens, and Thackeray". Behind the scenes
- Backtime has its history a bit wrong. In reality, Grant was actually in the west, running the Union forces at the Battle of Vicksburg at the time that Gettysburg was being fought. Furthermore, the character within the short bears little resemblance to the historical figure.
- However, it should be noted that as these stories are not depicting the real world, it can be assumed that the DWU simply has a different version of history to ours.
