Tradwife

According to Mr Colchester, Mary Appledore flooded the internet with "tradwife posts". He did not seem to be pleased about this trend. (AUDIO: A Christmas Card from Mr Colchester [+]Loading...["A Christmas Card from Mr Colchester (audio story)"])

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

A research-based video on this growing trend, by Rebecca Watson. (2024)

A neologism which is short for "traditional wife", "tradwife" is a label which is popular on TikTok and Instagram, for women who play some idea of the "ideal woman" for their husbands, harkening back to values supposedly common in 1950s white American culture.

This "neat marketing trick", as Amanda Marcotte puts it in Salon, "helps sell the central, lucrative fantasy to credulous audiences: [that] female submission is a woman's natural desire, one that's being stolen from them by sinister feminist forces".[1]

In a November 2024 video, Rebecca Watson describes these "influencers" as essentially fictional characters: "obsessed with making and raising babies, cooking, taking care of their man’s every need and desire, being white, not working outside the home, and definitely not having any other opinions on anything." These are "performers",[2] manipulating their audience with a "toxic fantasy"[1] which does not reflect the reality of their lives behind-the-scenes.[2]

Thus, much online commentary agrees with Mr Colchester's scorn, and there is a general fear for the growing influence of this trend.[1][2][3]
