Mounting The Rescue (documentary)
Mounting the Rescue is a BBC documentary on the making of the Doctor Who serial The Rescue. It was released on the DVD of the serial in a box set alongside The Romans.
The documentary explores the changes in cast that occurred between The Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Rescue, with Susan Foreman's departure and Vicki's introduction. It explains how Carole Ann Ford was unhappy that her character did little more than scream and that she decided to leave to avoid typecasting. Two actors were considered for the role of Vick: Denise Upson and Maureen O'Brien. Maureen was chosen.
It goes on to explain how Maureen was welcomed by all of the cast and crew including Ford herself. Mounting the Rescue shows how The Rescue and The Romans were recorded to together as one six-part block.
Shawcraft Models constructed the models for The Rescue. They apparently had to have exact instructions as they were poor designers but strong model makers.
Bernard Archard was considered for Bennett before Ray Barrett was chosen. Ian McLachlan explains his theory of an "all is not what it seems" theme running throughout Doctor Who. Jacqueline Hill was hurt by a special-effects explosion during the flare gun scene. She was not notably injured bit was shocked by the incident.
The inlay shot camera effect is explained. They were used for scenes where the crashed ship is in wide shot. Bernard Archard was considered for Bennett before Ray Barrett was chosen. Ian McLachlan explains his theory of an "all is not what it seems" theme running throughout Doctor Who.
The outstanding rating of the serial are touched upon and it ends with Ray Barrett professing that he will have "out rated the Daleks" on his tombstone.
