Arthur Wellesley (more commonly known by his title, the Duke of Wellington) defeated Napoléon Bonaparte at the battle of Waterloo. After the combat he remarked to the Fourth Doctor that "the only thing sadder than a battle lost, is a battle won." The Doctor later considered how right he was. (EDA: The Eight Doctors)
