- While surveying the Nine Travellers, Dr. Thomas Borlase is killed when one of the stones falls on him, assuming he did not meet a more intentional end at the hands of Cessair of Diplos ("The Stones of Blood").
- The TARDIS materializes on a slave ship off the coast of Sierra Leone, where the Doctor finds Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart. Having arrived here from 1871 Paris through a time rift, Kadiatu has slaughtered the entire crew, her genetic programming having placed her in killing mode the moment she felt threatened by them. The Doctor takes her to the People for observation ("The Also People").
