In late June 2010, just after the conclusion of Doctor Who's fifth series, an article claimed that Depp had signed on for a Doctor Who movie, playing the role of the Doctor, for release in 2012 under the former executive producer Russell T. Davies. The article quotes both Depp and Davies and subsequentely sparked a wealth of rumours. This was then exacerbated by reports of "falling ratings" during Smith's first series as the Doctor which, some reported, made it likely he would leave the role. The BBC have denied all rumours, dismissing them as "pure speculation.".
