Spoilers are strongly policed here.
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.

Not that long ago, we decided to delete the page entitled 'Earth - List of Appearances'. It has now be replaced with the category, 'stories set in Earth'. However, I believe that we should restore the page of Earth's appearances and replace all the stories that are set on Earth, which make up most of the list and replace it with the stories that are not set on Earth at all but with Earth still appearing. A example of this would be with the episode, The Girl Who Waited - is not set on Earth but a hologram of Earth appears, so that would go into the appearance list.

This could also work for humans (stories in which no nammed humans appear, the TARDIS, other planets etc). It would also replace the list of appearances pages for places that have the same information but in categories. MM/Want to talk? 13:12, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

Well, the issue is that MM wants to note when pictures of the Earth as it appears from space show up on screen. That strikes me as at least semi-reasonable, but "Earth - List of Appearences" won't cut it without a sizable preface. Otherwise, every time we get a shot of a chip shop in Dorking, that would count. So, MM literally wants a page of "appearances of the planet Earth", which isn't the physical ground-Earth, but just the Earth as a planet, seen from orbit or otherwise?
This also kinda goes against our idea that all stories are treated equally if we have to rely on the visual medium to justify this list. Or would we list when in a novel or audio when an image of the Earth is displayed?
Will this be useful? --Tangerineduel / talk 14:07, December 12, 2011 (UTC)
Interesting idea, but I'm with Bob. It's far too subtle a linguistic distinction. Most editors and readers won't understand what you're trying to accomplish. The page title would read like a legal document. You can't just say "Earth - List of Appearances"; everyone would read that as "setting"; they won't think of your definition. You'd have to title the thing something like "List of appearances of Earth in which Earth is not in any way the setting". If you can pitch a simpler name, I'd be all ears. But I don't think it's possible. I personally think you'd be better off with category:Stories featuring but not set on Earth, cause long category names aren't such a big deal. Cats tend to be used more by editors than casual readers, so there's more latitude there.
