A sovereign was a relatively rare coin of high value in some European kingdoms. Louis XIII, for example, once gave a French sovereign to his musketeers. It was such a rare experience that they seemed not to have a clear idea of the what the coin would buy. (AUDIO: The Church and the Crown)
