History[[edit] | [edit source]]

Pre-filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Palace of Arts and Palace of Industry buildings, seen in The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"], were located on Engineers Way,[1][2] having been built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and 1925.[2][3]

Filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

Location filming on Engineers Way for the third and fourth episodes, "Day of Reckoning" and "The End of Tomorrow" respectively,[3] occurred on the first day of filming for the serial on 23 August 1964.[1][2][3] Taking part in the day's filming were Jacqueline Hill playing Barbara, Ann Davies playing Jenny, Alan Judd playing Dortmun and Dalek operators Robert Jewell, Gerald Taylor, Nick Evans and Ken Tyllsen.[4] Engineers Way was the one of two locations in Wembley at which filming took place that day, the other being Third Way.[1] Filming had actually started at around 6am in central London but director Richard Martin had an agreement with the police to leave the area by a certain time, which was around or after 10am, necessitating that the final sequences of the day be shot elsewhere.[5]

Dortmun's death scene for "Day of Reckoning" was among the sequences shot at this location,[2][3] as was Barbara driving the dustcart out of the museum for "The End of Tomorrow". The long shadows across the road were cast by the nearby Wembley Arena. After this filming had been completed, the production team moved to Third Way on the other side of the estate[3] to shoot the last material of the day.[5]

Post-filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 2013, the Palace of Industry was demolished to make room for a car park.[6] What remained of the Palace of Arts was also destroyed by new developments around the same time after the site had been left derelict for a number a years.[7]
