John Wilcox

John Wilcox, BSC (7 May 1913-31 May 1979[1]) was the veteran cinematographer of the two 1960s Doctor Who films, Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.. He was the first person in Doctor Who history to have the title of director of photography. For three decades was the only person to occupy this role until Glen MacPherson filled the same position on the 1996 TV movie.

Much of his career was spent working at Hammer Films; in particular, he lensed several films for director Freddie Francis. Wilcox's last film was 1978's ensemble comedy The Hound of the Baskervilles; he became badly ill during production however, and was replaced by Dick Bush (who, co-incidentally, had worked as a film cameraman on the television version of Doctor Who). Wilcox never fully recovered from his illness, and died the following year.
