The Dalek Invasion of Earth[[edit] | [edit source]]
Location filming at Hammersmith Bridge for the first episode "World's End"[1][4] occurred on the third day of filming for the serial on 27 August 1964.[1][4][5] Taking part in the day's filming were all four members of the regular cast, Kenton Moore, Martyn Huntley and Peter Badger playing Robomen, Dalek operator Robert Jewell and stunt double Peter Diamond.[4] Although it was still featured in the finished episode, further scenes were originally planned to be filmed at Hammersmith Bridge until designer Spencer Chapman suggested that their location be changed to Kew Railway Bridge[6] as it was easier to replicate in the studio.[6][7] Sources disagree on precisely how much of the riverside sequences were filmed at each location.[nb 1]
One scene definitely filmed at Hammersmith Bridge, specifically on the North Bank,[1][6] was the cliffhanger for "World's End" which depicted the Doctor and Ian watch as a Dalek emerged from the River Thames. A reprise of this was featured in the next episode, titled "The Daleks".[1] Hammersmith Bridge was used for the riverside scenes as it offered easy access to a hospital in the event any of the actors swallowed water from the river, with a taxi on standby during filming.[7] Dalek operator Robert Jewell wore a wetsuit and scuba tanks for the scene.[4][5] Jewell had great difficulty in finding enough traction to get the Dalek out of the river[7] and so eventually a wire cable was attached to the prop to help him.[4][5][7] A photocall featuring the aquatic Dalek was also held at the location,[4][5] happening from 10am.[4]
Aside from the Hammersmith and Kew Bridges, other locations at which material was shot on 27 August included Butler's Wharf and Irongate Wharf. Location filming for the serial then concluded the following day at John's Hole Quarry.[4][7]
Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- ↑ Doctor Who On Location does not mention Kew Bridge at all, instead distinguishing between scenes shot on Hammersmith Bridge's North and South Bank. DWM 280 suggests all but the scene of Peter Diamond's Roboman walking into the River Thames was at Hammersmith which is agreed upon by The Doctor Who Production Diary: The Hartnell Years which states only that "a Roboman throwing himself into the water" was shot at Kew while the "riverside sequences" were shot at Hammersmith. Meanwhile, DWMSE 7 states Kew Rail Bridge was used for "most of the other riverside location scenes" save for the cliffhanger to the first episode.
