I'm The Doctor! was a short story published in Doctor Who The Official Annual 2016. It was written in the first person from the perspective of the Twelfth Doctor, being presented as a series of handwritten note taped onto the first page of a book belonging to the Doctor.

Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

In a series of increasingly stringent handwritten notes taped on the first page of a book, the Twelfth Doctor urges whatever human has now picked it up and read it to put it down and not read any further, for fear that this unauthorised reader may then spread what they have learned far and wide, exposing the Doctor's activities to the whole wider world — and also the double life of one Clara Oswald. However, in the process of describing what an unscrupulous reader could reveal, the Doctor himself unveils quite a lot. An additional note points out that Clara has hidden nine of his TARDIS keys inside the pages of the book.

Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • The Doctor fearfully speculates that if it were known that the Earth is constantly under attack from "monsters of every shape and size", humanity would panic and every school would be closed.
  • The Doctor says that Clara Oswald has "a temper", for which reason "shouting" would probably ensue if her double life as a time traveller as well as a Coal Hill School teacher were exposed.

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • The metafictional implication was that the book was itself the 2016 Annual. Although the Annual as commercially released obviously did not contain any TARDIS keys, or even toys resembling them, the shape of a key was hidden nine times throughout the book, as a kind of game alluding to the idea that Clara had hidden the keys inside the in-universe book.
