On the run from the Time Lords and in serious need of help, the Doctor heads for 17th-century Russia in search of the legendary witch of Slavic folkloreBaba Yaga.

But while trying to gain assistance from this powerful entity, the Doctor finds herself embroiled in events from the most famous of Baba Yaga's tales when she tries to help a beautiful young woman called Vasilisa retrieve a burning ember to save her family from the bitter Russian winter.

What is real? What is fantasy? And will the Doctor be able to tell the difference in time?

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • This anthology was originally announced on 23 April 2022,[1][2][3] during Big Finish Day 2022.[2][3][4] It was referred to as "The Fugitive Doctor Adventures volume one" in the Big Finish news article announcement,[1] and listed as The Fugitive Doctor 1 on its official webpage.[5]
  • The stories were recorded on 4, 9, and 11 January 2023 at the Soundhouse.[13]
  • Story and cast details, the cover, and the title of this anthology were finally revealed on 18 September 2024.[14][15][16] However, part of the cover was shown prior, from 30 July to 15 August, due to it being used in the banner image for Big Finish's Leading Ladies section of their 2024 website redesign, before said website redesign was rolled back to its predecessor on 16 August.
  • Chris Chibnall met with David Richardson and Robert Valentine over Zoom while they "threw around ideas". According to Richardson, "he gave us some clarifications about this most enigmatic era of Doctor Who. We came out of that meeting elated, full of purpose and sure of our direction".[13][14]
  • The trailer for this anthology was released on 25 November 2024.[17][18] It was uploaded to Big Finish's SoundCloud page the same day.[19]
  • This anthology was the feature of the Vortex 190 article, 'The Fugitive'.[20] Its cover art is also used for the front cover of that issue.
  • Producer David Richardson stated when this release was announced that "There’s a whole era to explore in these stories that follow on from Fugitive of the Judoon..."[1][2] While this could be interpreted as the anthology occurring after that story, he later said in Vortex 190, "we’re at the point in her life before the TV episode Fugitive of the Judoon",[20] meaning his earlier wording was likely figurative.
    • Per the same issue of Vortex, Richardson "knew that [he] didn’t want.. to step on the toes of Chris Chibnall’s backstory of the Fugitive Doctor," hence the Zoom meeting. He continued that, “We all agreed that we shouldn’t be trying to solve any mysteries of the Fugitive Doctor – at least not yet. For that reason, but mainly because I didn’t want to clash with anything in The Second Doctor Adventures, we have steered clear of her time working for Division. Well, to some degree, there’s some of that in there… but there were fine lines to tread and we have navigated our way through them."[20]
