From the Manual of Style
"The titles of articles about individual characters should be the name by which the character was most commonly known in the Doctor Who universe, (or "Whoniverse") with later names preferred to earlier names, and full names preferred to partial names or nicknames. Titles, such as military ranks or titles of nobility, should be omitted."
Right. Ushas is the Rani's real name, so why is her article got the name of her nickname
Koschei is the Master's real name, so why is his article got the name of his nickname
Mortimus is the Monk's real name, and rightly his article is names so.
so we either change The Master and The Rani to Koschei and Ushas respectivly or turn Mortimus back to The Monk.
P.S and if your thinking "Ah, but what about The Doctor, what do we change him to, Si?" well note this it says:
"... full names preferred to partial names or nicknames."
there is no "full name" to be "preferred" over his "nickname". ---Si http://images.wikia.com/tardis/images/e/e4/Si_HTL_Seal_Leader.PNG 17:41, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Koschei was the Master's name, but after the events of The Dark Path referred to himself as the Master, it isn't his nickname, it is his name.
Don't know about the Rani, but it's probably a similar case to the Master.
The Monk however refers to himself as Mortimus and it becomes established that that is his name. Also for the Monk there is the (possibility) that the name the Monk was never used by him (or even used by other characters as a name) on screen/in novels.
The Manual of Style is ever evolving, it does state preferred rather than must. --Tangerineduel 13:17, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
Also I would suggest that we give material from the TV series priority over things introduced in other media, as those as more generally accepted by the majority of, er, people who actually care, no matter what the manual of style may say.
Or, to be more informal, if you say 'the Rani', most fans will say 'renegade Time Lord, played by Kate O'Mara, chemist, odd dress sense, Pip 'n' Jane' etc. Whereas if you say 'Ushas' the majority even of Dr Who fans will probably say 'who's that then?' (or 'gezundheit', and offer you a handkerchief...) --Gai-jin 15:40, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Archivist's notes[[edit source]]

In general, all this is current policy. The Master is "the Master", the Rani is "the Rani". But we've had a subsequent discussion to decide that the Monk is "the Monk". These Time Lords can of course have redirects for names gained in other media. See Tardis:Manual of Style#Referring to certain characters for more.
