Forum:User pages and categories?
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.
Is it normal for user pages to appear on general category pages, or should they only be placed in user categories? What should you do if you notice a user page that seems to be appearing somewhere by error? Fennel Soup ☎ 21:47, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

I don't believe user pages are supposed to appear on categories meant for regular pages, however I believe editing other users' pages is against policy. I think the best course of action is probably either using the talk page for the user page in question/the user's talk page (so that the person themselves may remove the category) or informing an admin of the issue. - In this specific respect it is permissible to edit user pages, which should indeed not appear in the external category tree. This can be done without loss of information by changing e.g. [[Category:Individual examples]] to [[:Category:Individual examples]] (that being, for the unaware, how one changes a category tag to a link to the category page). --Scrooge MacDuck ☎ 21:59, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Huh, I could've sworn back on Fandom I got warned on my talk page for removing categories on a user page. I suppose I was inexperienced and probably just deleted them entirely, though. Cookieboy 2005 ☎ 22:02, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- I've been told off, but for fixing deadlinks. So decently similar. Perhaps this should change, wink wink? 17:59, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- A couple follow-up questions:
- If a user page is using Template:Spoiler, is it best to leave the template in place without nowiki even though it technically places the page in a non-user category? Or should nowiki be applied?
- User:Doc77can/sandbox11 is currently appearing in every subcategory of Category:Book covers, but I don't know enough about DPL to prevent this from happening non-invasively. Could an admin take a look at it when they have time? Fennel Soup ☎ 18:34, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
