Ainu was a former miner on Chloris who became a member of a band of thieves unofficially led by Torvin.
Ainu was quick to remind Torvin that they were a democracy and that he was not their leader despite the orders he gave. Ainu opposed Torvin's decision to kill Romana II and a vote was held. The majority voted in favour of killing her, but Romana convinced them otherwise. Ainu participated in a raid on Adrasta's palace. After Karela killed Torvin, the band almost moved to side with her but the Fourth Doctor had K9 destroy the metal they plundered. Defeated, they rejected Karela. (TV: The Creature from the Pit)
