Professor Charles Kettering was a scientist and the Master's assistant on the Keller Machine.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Kettering had been afraid of water ever since he was a child, when he had nearly drowned in a boating accident, and still couldn't swim or even get into a boat. (PROSE: The Mind of Evil)

Kettering demonstrated the machine's first use in Stangmoor Prison to a group of observers, consisting of the press, among whom was James Stevens from the Daily Chronicle (PROSE: Who Killed Kennedy) and two representatives from UNIT: the Third Doctor and Jo Grant.

The Doctor continuously interrupted Kettering during his elucidation about the Keller process. After Barnham, the one-hundred-and-thirteenth person to undergo the process, had an odd reaction, the Doctor claimed that the Keller Machine was a new and unusual menace to mankind. (TV: The Mind of Evil, PROSE: Who Killed Kennedy)

Kettering refused to listen to the Doctor's warnings about the Keller Machine's dangers, and it was while checking over the machine shortly after the mysterious death of one of the observers, a medical student named Arthur Linwood, that it mysteriously self-activated and killed him by turning his fear of drowning against him. His fear was so great that water manifested in his lungs, causing him to drown in the perfectly dry Process Theatre. (TV: The Mind of Evil)

Appearance[[edit] | [edit source]]

Professor Kettering was an elegant man. He wore a dark suit and looked as though he was on his way to an appointment at his consulting rooms on Harley Street. (PROSE: The Mind of Evil)
