In the late 22nd century, a series of skirmishes known at the time as "the Cyber-conflicts" occurred between humans and Cybermen at the outermost human colony planets. Gustav Zemler served in the Cyber-conflicts.
A skirmish occurred on Titan 317, with Captain Zemler's Special Forces unit being charged with the task of eliminating a squad of Cybermen from a secure research bunker. The Cybermen had taken every man, woman and child there hostage, so the bunker could not be nuked. Zemler and his men went in and engaged Cybermen directly using plasma weapons, resulting in a flreflght which wiped out both the Cybermen and the hostages, with only Zemler and his squad surviving.
