- The Doctor and his new friend Peri arrive on Androzani Minor, a world of deep dark caves and molten mud. Beneath the surface they discover gunrunners, magma beasts and a bitter war raging between military forces from Androzani Major and the disfigured criminal Sharaz Jek, whose android spies are everywhere. But all of these threats pale into insignificance once the Doctor makes a horrifying discovery; he and Peri are dying from spectrox toxaemia, and unless he can find a cure the two of them will never leave the caves of Androzani alive...
