Fall of Tobruk

Fall of Tobruk

The Fall of Tobruk occurred during World War II, prior to March 1941 (PROSE: Just War) at Tobruk in North Africa. (AUDIO: Earthfall)

According to Bernice Summerfield's diary, in the chronology of the war, it was preceded by the invasion of Romania some time earlier, and was followed by a British and German confrontation in Greece that April. (PROSE: Just War)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

Tobruk changed hands three times in the course of the war:

  • The British captured the port from the Italians in January 1941.
  • Allied defenders successfully withstood the Axis siege from April to November 1941.
  • The Germans and Italians recaptured the port in June 1942.
  • The British took Tobruk once again after victory at El Alamein in November 1942.

Given that Just War is set in early March 1941, the mention of the Fall of Tobruk most likely refers to the initial British capture. However, the name "Fall of Tobruk" more commonly refers to the Axis recapture.
